W3C HTML working group to be chaired by Microsoft

Industry 2 comments

Last year, the W3C announced that they will be setting up a new working group to “reinvent HTML”. (via 456 Berea St)

Chris Wilson from Microsoft has been put forward to lead the group and when you think about it, this could be a good or bad choice depending on how you look at it.

On one hand, Microsoft hasn’t exactly been good at following web standards, or listening to the web professionals out there. So you could say that he has no place to be the chair of this group.

One the other hand, this could really work in Microsoft’s favour. If they use the group to feed back information to the Internet Explorer team, they might have a better chance at making Internet Explorer up there with the rest of the compliant browsers in terms of standards.

What do you think? A good or bad thing?

From what I know of him, Chris Wilson is one of the good guys.

I saw him speak last year at @media 2006 and he came across as someone who is passionate about the internet and dedicated to steering MS in the right direction. Considering it’s not that long ago that MS said there’d be no further development of IE I think Chris & the rest of the IE team did a great job getting as much support for standards in as they did.

Chris is (in my opinion) a good choice to lead the working group, I think he’ll put the interests of developers and users above those of his employer.

There’s quite an interesting debate on this on his blog: http://blogs.msdn.com/cwilso/default.aspx

Hi Mark, yes I agree with you. Reading other peoples views on it, it does look like he will be a good choice for the job.

Thanks for the link, I’ll have a read through that.
