Going back to my previous post about switching to Apple or not, I came across another fellow blogger/web designer who has just made the switch.
In his post he lists his thoughts and experiences in his first month of switching to a Macbook from a PC.
It’s a very interesting read and it even makes me want to switch more now!
One of the things holding me back the most is that I’m so used to MS IIS, MySQL and ASP that I wouldn’t really be able to develop my websites on a Mac, unless I used the bootcamp and installed Windows on it but I guess that defeats the object of getting a Mac really doesn’t it?

Not really.
You can use Windows for the development stuff, but go back to the Mac for anything else.
I know of two people who’ve made the switch from PC to Mac and both are ASP developers.
They’ve found ways around the issue.
Also, if you’re up for a better developer experience, try PHP! ;-)

I don’t know what the deal is concerning ASP development, but if you aim to be a PHP/Rails one, then getting a Mac (and, most importantly, using the programs you feel most comfortable with) can really speed up all the things you have to do when developing your project.
Anyway, I’m gonna install Parallels one day… I don’t think that’s a counter sense. Having Windows running in a window (lol, sorry for the words game) can be really helpful: you keep developing with Mac OS, and test your product “live” on a Windows machine.

I have been a classic ASP developer for a few years now and really need to get into php but never got round to it. I suppose it’s what you’re used to. I also would like to learn .net2 and 3 when it comes out but there’s not enough time in the day!
Parallels sounds great I’d not heard of that before. So you can run windows in a window and run anything you want in that windows window? (lol windows window, you’ve got me doing it now)

One of the guys doing his ASP on a Mac tells me of some advances with ASP / .NET that bring it into the same space as PHP while moving forward in others.
So my view of ASP has changed a little, but the way I look at things is this: learn PHP and you’re on the road to understanding C / C++ (albeit at a low level to begin with) and the likes of ActionScript and JavaScript.

Excellent thank for that Wayne, I’ll check that out.
Update: I’ve just read that article and it sounds great. More and more things are tempting me over to Apple now, I can’t see me holding on much longer :)
